Five Reasons to Retreat
Someone recently said that my upcoming Montana retreat looks like the vacation they need from their vacation. I know that feeling. Some trips come with a flurry of planes, trains, and automobiles so that you can get the most out of where you are in the shortest amount of time. There is certainly a time and place for vacations like that. But when you’re ready for a getaway that leaves you more rejuvenated than ragged, I think a retreat-style trip is hands down the way to go.
I curate my retreats to be the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, with plenty of options to suit each end of the spectrum or cherry pick from both. There are so many styles of retreats offered in the world, so choosing the one that fits your travel goals is important.
Here are five reasons that going on a retreat with me (specifically to Montana this summer!) can be just the thing you need to reignite your senses, brighten your spirit, and recharge your mind and body:
An Abundance of Time: It’s rare that we get dropped into a place where we don’t have to leave. When you take away the need to rush from place to place, it lends more time to move slowly and thoughtfully throughout your days. While it usually takes me a day or two to acclimate to a slower pace, the deep sense of relaxation that follows is always worth it. At this upcoming retreat to Montana, we’ll have hiking trails in our backyard, horses that will be delivered solely for our group’s excursion, water to fly fish on, pickleball and tennis courts to try our hand at, and a lodge next to our accommodations serving up healthy, unforgettable meals. At most retreat centers, both adventure and relaxation are right outside your doorstep and your only job is to ask yourself: How do I want to spend my time today?
Disconnect to Reconnect: While not required, I highly encourage leaving your phones on Do Not Disturb and snagging them only to take photos of the jaw dropping beauty around you. Digital detoxing, moving more mindfully, and using your senses to connect you to the moment will be the reset your mind and body need in order to create a deeper sense of calm, clarity and focus. I can pretty much guarantee you will return to your daily life feeling balanced, grounded, and inspired.
Self-Care Immersion: The term ‘self-care’ is used in abundance these days, but it’s a term so fitting for a retreat. This experience will help you immerse yourself in what it is that you specifically need. So if in daily life you are a caregiver or a boss or a student or any number of roles that require giving to others and sacrificing your needs, this experience will refill your cup. Every day is an opportunity to give your soul the siesta that it craves.
Discover + Explore: One of the most unexpected benefits of a retreat is the sense of community that inevitably gets cultivated. Most people on a retreat are passionate about and committed to their health and wellbeing. People from all walks of life come on a retreat, and the deeper, more meaningful connections that are created out of a unique, shared experience can make for lifelong friends and future travel buddies. As a self-described introvert, I understand that not everyone is looking for a social experience on retreat, so the invitation to create the trip you’re looking for is always extended.
A Gift to Yourself: Going on a retreat is an investment in YOU. Whether you are joining as a solo traveler or coming with family or friends, it allows for time to invest in yourself, your yoga practice, and the experience you’re after. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just getting started with the practice, there will be plenty of chances to learn and grow. My wish for every retreat-goer is that they make choices that are going to re-energize them, fill their cups, and gift themselves the luxury of slowing down. The positive impact of a retreat can extend far beyond the actual trip, turning into the gift that keeps giving, so by the time you get home, you’ll be ready to tackle whatever life throws your way.
